Ayurveda is the oldest indigenous system of plant drugs used for preventing or suppressing various tumors. These days ayurvedic medicine will be used as a complementary and alternative medicine for the management of cancer. According to ‘Charaka’ and ‘Sushruta Samhitas’ cancer is explained as inflammatory or non-inflammatory swelling and cited as Granthi (minor neoplasm or non-malignant tumors) or Arbuda (major neoplasm or cancer). Three basics of ayurveda which are important for general body function are the nervous system (vata or air), venous system (pitta or fire) and arterial system (kapha or water)
Main aim of ayurveda therapy is to find the cause of illness and divided into four categories
- Prakritisthapani chikitsa (health maintenance),
- Rasayana chikitsa, (restoration of normal function),
- Roganashani chikitsa (disease cure) and
- Naishthiki chikitsa (spiritual approach)
Ayurvedic herbal decoctions prepared by multiple herbs have potential for curing cancer. These formulations can influence organ systems together and provide a better defense system to the body.
Ayurveda cancer treatment comprises three stages
Detoxification
Cleaning of various organs in the body is referred to as detoxification. It is the process by which toxins from the body such as free radicals, metabolic waste, cancer toxins, and unutilized medicines are removed. This process of purification is called sodhana chikitsa.
It may involves in following phases
- Internal purification, in which visceral organs are purified by using internal medicines
- External purification, in which medicinal pastes (lepa) and formulated oils are used on external body
- Purification Of blood
Treatment
Ayurvedic treatment’s main goal is to kill cancer cells, so it can prevent the growth and spreading of cancer to other parts. This treatment has no negative effects. It varies from person to person.
Rejuvenation
Rejuvenation of the body can be done by using various rasayanas which can enhance the quality of life. It gives more importance in increasing the lifespan of the person and reducing the pain and suffering.
