Is Saree Cancer a Myth or a Real Threat?

Tight sarees worn around the waist can cause a unique variant of skin cancer in women called saree cancer.

The underlying cause for this cancer is the excessive friction and irritation of the fabric on the skin which results in darkened areas or roughened patches.

The focus should be on the development of the disease, as these aggravated forms of lesions can eventually lead to a cancer development

It is a major concern but less common as it only affects a small proportion of women.

Loose and breathable clothing should be worn, adequate sanitation maintained and the methods of draping of the saree changed frequently to keep saree cancer at bay.
